"The industry has needed a way to distinguish contracting companies that are committed to quality EIFS installations," says Mark Nabity, AWCI's committee chairman responsible for the EIFSmart Contractor recognition. "We believe a way of identifying those companies is through extensive and proper training of their work force and employee certification. Likewise, having this title is a reward for the deserving companies.

Launched in July 2002, the EIFSmart Contractor seal provides a way to identify quality EIFS companies to owners, insurers, architects and other trade factors. AWCI expects this brand will give these companies a bidding edge, increased insurance options, recognition of their EIFS expertise and other benefits. This seal is one the requirements for EIFS coverage under AWCI’s captive insurance program. In addition, participating companies are listed on the EIFSmart Contractor National Registry on this web site and identified in the Who's Who in the Wall and Ceiling Industry.

Eligibility Requirements
The primary requirement for the EIFSmart recognition is the company's commitment to standardized, generic EIFS education and related national certification. Education and certification for your company's employees are made available through AWCI's EIFS programs.
A company must submit the application for EIFSmart Contractor Seal when the program eligibility requirements have been met. EIFSmart Contractor Seal is NOT automatic with individual certification – it must be pursued by the company by separate application. The EIFSmart application form is available to download by clicking here. The sooner you make the commitment to EIFS certification for your employees, the sooner you can pursue this company recognition, and the easier it will be to maintain your EIFSmart Contractor listing on the National Registry. Annual reporting and renewal of EIFSmart status is required by July 1 of each year.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility requirements have been slowly ramping up over the past several years and are now the same from year to year. The requirements are:
- 40% of the company's EIFS employees, plus at least one employee with decision making authority, must be AWCI certified; and
- This percentage must be maintained on all EIFS projects; and
- There must be an AWCI certified foreman on each project.

AWCI's EIFS Education and Certificate Programs
AWCI's EIFS programs instruct on correct application and/or inspection techniques of Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS). This generic instruction is not product specific. Both seminar and Video program formats are based on industry-accepted material and procedures followed by a multiple-choice test for certification.
There are two ways to obtain the required education and national certification:
- Attendance at the instructor-led seminars - these offer three categories of certification: for the Industry Professional, the EIFS Inspector and the Mechanic.
- Use of the "EIFS-Doing It Right!" video and workbook - this flexible method of "on-demand" EIFS instruction offers certification for mechanics and is ideal for instruction and certification for the work force.
Construction Dimensions, the premier industry magazine, featured an article on the EIFSmart program and the value of certification in the January 2003 issue. Click here to view or download a copy of the EIFSmart Contractor program article in PDF format.
