New Kids on the Block

September 2008

At the time of this writing, summer is more than half gone, jobs are bidding, labor is short, and materials are going up … what’s new? Well, I want to talk to you about something that is new: the reincarnation of AWCI’s Young Executives Council.

You may recall that I talked about that former council in my speech at the convention. Since then, I have met with the AWCI Education Committee and Executive Vice President/CEO Steve Etkin, and I believe we are well on the way to retooling it to fit the needs of today and tomorrow.

The original Young Executives Council (back in the early 1980s) was a group of young people who went on to have a major influence on the growth and leadership of AWCI. At least 10 of us in the council have become president of the AWCI.

Not only did this council help increase the involvement and leadership of AWCI members, but it offered a tremendous venue for owners of our companies to get their young future stars to experience the value of industry through networking and industry-tailored education seminars.

We will start developing the new version of the council at our next Academy meeting, Jan. 30–31, 2009, at the Doubletree Hotel Atlanta-Buckhead. This will be the first of several in-depth seminars over the next several years, mostly geared to an Academy or possible Executive Committee Week type of function. We will name it AWCI Management Institute, and brand it as Management—Doing It Right.

For company owners, please start looking at your future up-and-comers now. If you are an up-and-comer who wants to be more involved with your company, then let your boss know that you want to be a part of this next generation of industry-educated company managers and executives.

Watch for more information in future months. And give Steve or me a call if you have ideas for the new program.

See you next month!
