BASF Supports New Tool to Help Reduce the Carbon Footprint of Building Projects

January 2020

BASF is a pilot partner for the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), a free, open-source online tool designed to easily calculate the carbon emissions of building materials.

The EC3 tool launched Nov. 19, 2019, at the Greenbuild® International Conference and Expo in Atlanta. It was developed under the leadership of the Carbon Leadership Forum in collaboration with Skanska and key development partner C-Change Lab.

Neopor GPS is a graphite polystyrene rigid foam insulation that uses up to 30 percent less material than alternative products.

Neopor GPS directly supports the intent of the EC3 tool: to help building professionals quantify, report and reduce the embodied carbon impact of their projects. Embodied carbon is the carbon dioxide emitted during the manufacturing, transportation and installation of building materials. It is estimated that between now and 2060, the amount of building floorspace in the world will double and at least half of the carbon footprint of new buildings will take the form of embodied carbon.

Neopor GPS has already been recognized for its sustainable attributes. It is GreenGuard Gold certified and has been recognized by both The Collaborative for High Performance Schools and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building rating system.
