Year in Review
Jerry Smith / June 2019
As I ponder my last president’s message, I look back over the last four years and realize what an honor it has been to serve on the executive committee and to be the president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry. With my term coming to an end soon, I can’t believe how fast the year has gone by. I was told by my peers in the industry who have served in the role that it would go by in a flash, and it certainly has.
It has been a very busy and productive year. I started my travels in Australia, attending the AWCI of Australia and New Zealand convention and trade show, and followed it up with several AWCI events across the United States. No matter what part of the country we are in, it seems we still have pretty much the same problems and issues. Still, seeing how our members in various regions handle hot issues in different ways was eye-opening. Some of the most prevalent problems and topics have been manpower shortages, prefabrication opportunities and how we are using technology to help address those issues.
I want to thank Steve Etkin and the staff of the AWCI for helping me through my presidential year. They did an incredible job and I greatly appreciate all of their hard work. I also want to thank my BakerTriangle family for their support. Special thanks go to Bryan and Steve Baker for allowing me to fulfill my dream of going through the chairs on the AWCI executive committee. Last but not least, I want to thank my wife Kim for always being there to support me through the last four years. She has been an absolute pillar of strength for me.
As I leave my year as president, I am confident that the organization is going to be in very capable hands with our incoming president, Nancy Brinkerhoff, and our executive committee.
In addition to being 2018–2019 president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, Jerry Smith is president of Baker Drywall Austin, Ltd.
