AWCI’s Excellence in Construction Safety Award

The winner of AWCI’s 2012 Excellence in Construction Safety Award for companies with more than 300,000 annual man-hours is Daley’s Drywall & Taping, Inc. in Campbell, Calif.

The diversified company fosters a work culture of a progressive attitude a commitment to excellence. Its mission promises its clients more than quality and service; it also pledges to relentlessly meet or exceed the requirements of its customers and OSHA standards. The company’s mantra is, “Safety is not a one-time event; it must be a way of life.”

Daley’s Drywall & Taping accrued significant cost savings with a 99 percent reduction in lost time and productivity due to healthcare facility visits for injured workers, lost days and job transfer time. A subsequent reduction in insurance premiums and the costs associated with resolving workers’ comp cases resulted in a significant impact on overhead. More important savings came from reducing case severity. Reducing their Lost Time incidents from a high of 12 to 0 and reducing Job Transfer cases from a high of 13 to 1 had a much greater effect on insurance costs than the reduction in total cases. These insurance costs can vastly exceed the cost of medical treatment, and drive insurance premiums through the roof.

Daley’s credits the success of its safety program to a 100 percent buy-in throughout its entire organization, starting with its executive management team. While new and returning employees who have been off the job for more than six months receive formal orientation safety training, the company’s safety program is reinforced in virtually every work-related activity. Weekly safety training in the field is held on every job, which is constantly monitored for adherence to its safety policies.

The company stresses the commitment of its management organization and the expectation of the same commitment from every one of its employees. The foreman and superintendents not only support the program, they are safety role models.
