CISCA Honors Construction Excellence
The Ceilings & Interior Systems Construction Association honored its best at an awards breakfast held during the association’s annual convention at the end of April.
Winning the CISCA’s highest honor, the DeGelleke Award, is Claude Amerson of T-P Acoustics in Phoenix. The DeGelleke Award is presented to an individual whose contribution to the industry and the association has been acknowledged as significant and noteworthy.

Canadian HBA Presents Award
The Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association has bestowed its Award of Honour on Hanson Brick’s Canadian Vice President, Commercial Frank Buck for his commitment to forwarding the association’s mission.
Each year, the Canadian Home Builders’ Association recognizes one home builder and one non-home builder member for their service through its local HBAs. Buck received the award with Patrick O’Hanlon of Kylemore Communities at the annual Industry Luncheon in April.
Buck, who joined Hanson Brick in 1999, has more than 25 years’ experience in sales and marketing for the building industry. In addition to his four years on the GTHBA board, Buck has served as the emcee for the GTHBA Home Builder Awards and facilitates Hanson Brick’s marketing partnership and corporate sponsorship.
NAWIC 2006 Crystal Vision Award Winners
The National Association of Women in Construction, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, announces the winners of its 12th annual Crystal Vision Awards. The mission of the Crystal Vision Awards is to recognize individuals who promote, expand and encourage the role of women in the construction industry. Dale McCormick is the recipient of the Crystal Vision Award, which is awarded to a nonmember of NAWIC, and Tari S. Rivera is the recipient of the Crystal Achievement Award, which is awarded to a NAWIC member.
Rivera, a member of the Cleveland Chapter, is founder and president of Regency Construction Services, Inc., a construction management firm located in Lakewood, Ohio, primarily providing services to K-12 and university clients. Rivera oversees all aspects of corporate business planning and financial matters. She has encouraged and empowered women in construction by creating and implementing company policy at Regency Construction Services, Inc., mentoring women inside and outside her company, and establishing university programs that introduce engineering and construction opportunities to female students.
McCormick is director of Maine State Housing, where she manages 125 employees and an $11 million budget. She works with MSH to finance more than $130 million in affordable housing projects each year. She manages 3,500 Rental Assistance Vouchers and 800 affordable rental properties, and provides low-income heating and energy assistance to 48,000 residents.
Rivera and McCormick will be honored on Sept. 9, 2006, for their achievements during the Crystal Vision Awards Gala at NAWIC’s 51st Annual Meeting and Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
Triangle Plastering Systems, Inc. Receives ABC Award
Associated Builders and Contractors, Washington, D.C., announced that Trangle Plastering System’s work on the Firewheel Town Center in Garland, Texas, has earned the company the association’s top Exellence in Construction Award. Triangle Plastering systems’ representatives received an award at ABC’s 2006 National Convention in Las Vegas for taking first place in the Exterior Finish caytegory of ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards.
ABC designed the EIC program to recognize publicly excellent performance in the merit shop constructin field. The award honors all construction team members, including the contractor, the owner and the design team. This year’s competition was open to all construction projects completed by ABC member firms during 2005. The winning projects were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
Triangle Plastering worked to provide cost savings by identifying and developing new products for this lifestyle center, including more than 207,000 square feet of synthetic stucco, 650 detail shapes and more than 80 colors.
CertainTeed Facility Receives Safety Award
CertainTeed Corporation’s Unisul insulation blowing machine manufacturing facility in Winter Haven, Fla., has won the prestigious Saint-Gobain Diamond Safety Award. The facility is one of only 25 sites worldwide to achieve the honor this year.
Saint-Gobain, parent company of CertainTeed, reviewed more than 1,000 company locations worldwide before selecting the top 25 plants in environmental, health and safety performance for 2005. The Diamond Award is Saint-Gobain’s highest health, safety and environment award and is part of the company’s commitment to social responsibility and welfare of employees.
Since the award was established in 1990, CertainTeed has received the award 11 times for safe operations at various plants, the most of any of Saint-Gobain’s North American subsidiaries. Four of these awards have been for safety achievements of CertainTeed Insulation Group facilities.
Dryvit Receives 2005 ACE Award
Dryvit Systems, Inc., West Warwick, R.I., has been awarded first place in the EIF Systems & Stucco category of Architecture Magazine’s 2005 Architecture ACE Awards.
The ACE Awards (Architect’s Choice for Excellence) recognize manufacturers’ commitment to supplying superior products and services. Winners are chosen by vote of the publication’s readership.
Schrader Receives Award from Omnova Solutions
The board of directors of Omnova Solutions, Fairlawn, Ohio, announced that Jon Schrader, director of operations at Omnova’s Monroe, N.C., Decorative Products facility is a recipient of the company’s Platinum Chairman’s Award. The award salutes the highest level of achievement and contribution at Omnova. It honors the “best of the best” employees who make truly outstanding contributions that have a positive impact on the company’s performance, as well as the employee that does so in a way that reinforces Omnova’s performance culture and values.
Schrader, a veteran of the Monroe plant for 33 years, has held various management, manufacturing and technical positions prior to his current role of director of operations.
USG Facility Recognized
United States Gypsum Company’s Alabaster, Mich., quarry near Tawas City has received Habitat Program Recertification from the Wildlife Habitat Council. The quarry operation qualified for this recognition through its ongoing projects to restore and improve wildlife habitat on 3,500 acres of company property. Projects include tree planting, wetland remediation, forest thinning, installation of bird nesting boxes, deer management and control of invasive plants.
WHC is a nonprofit group of corporations, conservation organizations and individuals dedicated to restoring and enhancing wildlife habitat. The council’s Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification Program recognizes commendable wildlife habitat management and environmental education programs at individual sites.
U.S. Gypsum Company’s Alabaster plant was originally certified by WHC in 1998. Since then, the company has had 4,400 trees and shrubs planted on its property, including 3,000 tamarack trees, or Eastern larch, in wetland restoration areas. Employees and local Boy Scouts also have installed 26 wood duck boxes and seven songbird houses to encourage diversity of species.
Locations become WHC-certified based on an evaluation of their programs by a panel of WHC wildlife biologists and staff. Sites must demonstrate that programs have been active for at least a year and submit a management plan that documents their goals and achievements. Recertification is for two years.
Centennial Earns Safety Award
Centennial Contractors Enterprises, Vienna, Va., has been awarded the 13th Annual Paragon Safety Award for 2005. The award is presented by the Associated Builder and Contractors to companies that excel at promoting, incorporating and implementing safe practices on the job site.
Centennial’s long track record of workplace safety stems from the belief that safety is a paramount leadership requirement in the construction industry. Their corporate safety mission statement declares that safety is the single most important aspect of their business.
“Safety is our number one priority,” says Tony Lombardi, corporate safety director for Centennial. “And winning this award shows our passion for safety.”
As part of Centennial’s commitment to job site safety, they work to promote a “safety culture” though education of subcontractors, developing a safety Web site, increasing safety personnel, and requiring safety training with in 30 days of hire for all staff.
Centennial also hosts safety fairs around the country, and invites employees, subcontractors and vendors to participate in a day-long safety training program. The fairs are a simple and effective way to cover safety issues around the job site, yet relatively few companies engage in similar programs.
Recently the Hampton Roads, Va., division hosted a safety fair that covered classes in fall protection, scaffolding and leading causes of fatalities. All project sites were shut down for the day, so that everyone could attend.
Their dedication is also proven by their exemplary Experience Modification Rating, 0.69, which places them amongst the top 5 percent of companies in the country.
Contact Lumber Wins Environmental Award
Portland, Ore. based, Contact Lumber Company, was awarded a Green Builder Magazine “Best in Show” Honorable Mention, following the company’s participation in this year’s National Green Building Conference. Editors of Green Builder magazine attended the conference in search of winners for the magazine’s “Best of Show” award series. After judging 61 exhibitor products, Contact Lumber was one of 10 exhibitors to receive an award.
Using high-performance machinery and resource-efficient substrates, Contact Lumber extends resources by up to 50 times, compared to solid wood millwork. A single block of 5/4 solid hardwood might make a single moulding profile, but Contact Lumber can get as many as 50 identical products from that same block. Contact also works with suppliers who offer environmentally-certified woods and veneers (when it can be sourced), and more than 95 percent of the raw material that enters Contact’s plant leaves the facility as a usable product destined for the marketplace or further manufacturing processes.
