As I write this column, having recently returned from the Florida Wall & Ceiling Contractors Association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla., last month, I realize how much fun this year will be as president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry. It was wonderful to meet many new people and see how AWCI’s Florida chapter puts on its show. Thanks should go out to everyone who helped make it a success.
The hot topic for this month’s magazine is jobsite safety. In all honesty, safety should be the hot topic for all contractors every month. There are no shortcuts to having a good safety program and in today’s marketplace, that safety program can be the difference between getting a job or losing it. Don’t be one of those contractors who wished he had put the time and effort into a program after missing out on a big contract.
Take advantage of AWCI’s Safety Software to get your program off on the right track or to fine tune the program you already have in place. Also, get involved with your local safety association and get in touch with your local federal Occupational Safety and Health Association office. OSHA is not the big bad wolf that it is portrayed to be. If you reach out to your local office, it will work with you to develop and implement a sound safety regimen.
As the summer heat continues, I hope everyone has the work they can handle and that their backlog is plentiful. Having a sound safety program can ensure that is the case this summer and for more to come.
