What It Takes to Succeed

Happy New Year! We are officially in the year 2020, as hard as that is for some of us to believe!

AWCI is off and running into this new decade. AWCI Executive Vice President & CEO Michael Stark will be busy attending a variety of functions giving him an opportunity to meet many of you. AWCI has also recently welcomed Mike Kowalski as the new director of finance and operations. He is taking over for Bahman Kheradmand, who retired at the end of 2019 after 20 years of service. We wish Bahman all the best as he begin new adventures in life.

It seems like our industry is changing almost by the day. One of those changes is software technology, which continues to play a growing role in our world. Information is now at our fingertips, and everyone expects answers immediately. Does this frustrate you and your team? It does me and my team.

At times that frustration level can leave people feeling inadequate because they believe they are unable to perform their tasks and duties quickly enough. So what can we do to remain calm and provide the level of service clients have come to expect? Start by embracing new technology and then make sure everyone is properly trained—that includes being trained on everything from a simple new phone system to complex software management and estimating programs. It will ensure that your company is positioned to offer new levels of service that may set you apart from competitors and help provide the instant answers we all expect.

It sounds good on paper, but we all know that pressing ahead as quickly as possible is not always easy—especially during these economic times when workloads are abundant. Still, in order for us as contractors to keep pace with rapidly changing technology, we must embrace it. As company leadership adapts, our team will follow. And ultimately, with better tools in place, they will feel more confident and able to accomplish what is necessary for our companies to continue to prosper.

In addition to being 2019–2020 president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, Nancy Brinkerhoff is CEO and president of Ironwood Commercial Builders in Northern California.
