For those of us who choose to get involved and participate in our local or national industry associations, sometimes we focus on just the education, the burden of business issues and the time commitment.
But, hey, it’s a lot of fun too. Jackie, my wife, and I have made some good friends both in our hometown and around the country just by participating. (On a more somber note, an outstanding, long-time AWCI member has left us. I’ll say more about my friend Bill Carroll next month, but for now you can go to page 18 to learn about this industry giant.) And travel: We’ve been to great places we would have never seen had it not been for association events.
No meeting site is all business, there’s always time to explore the area, do local tours, join in on the golf tournament and dine in fine restaurants. Our cultural knowledge of our country has been enhanced greatly through these visits.
My first travel opportunity since becoming president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry in July was participating in the awards program at the Florida Wall & Ceiling Contractors Association. Their hospitality made me feel instantly welcome. I spent quality time with a few friends I’ve known through AWCI and met new ones at their reception, golf tournament and dining events.
The project awards were impressive and the ceremony well attended. We learned that the Florida economy is coming back—not to previous highs, but better than a few years ago. Good to see.
The FWCCA trade show was very impressive with displays and information from all over that state. Walking booth to booth I ran into even more friends I’ve met at previous AWCI conventions and trade shows—so great to stay in touch.
We grow by getting out of the office, away from the TV and everyday life. Yeah, it’s a time commitment, but so well worth it in the big picture. So continue to join in, participate and have fun.
In addition to being 2013–2014 president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, Daley is president of Daley’s Drywall & Taping, Inc., San Jose, Calif.
