Technical Services

In 2025, AWCI’s Technical Services Department remained engaged with the International Code Council (ICC) and UL Solutions (UL) to ensure our members are always well-informed. By staying closely aligned with the latest code developments and standard-setting activities, we provide the timely updates and technical insights our members need to operate with confidence.

Stucco and Drainage Planes Technical Document

Updated in March 2025, this Stucco and Drainage Planes technical document was prepared by the Lath and Plaster Committee of the AWCI Construction Technology Council.

This document provides information on model code language specific to the requirement for a drainage system or drainage material behind exterior cement plaster (“stucco”) cladding. The text reflects language found in the following:

Codes and Technical Council

The AWCI Codes and Technical Council (CTC) remained highly active in 2025, meeting regularly to address critical technical, code and safety issues impacting members.

  • Expanded Focus: The CTC expanded its expertise by launching a new Firestopping and Fireproofing Committee, joining existing committees covering Ceilings, Steel Framing, Gypsum, EIFS and Stucco.
  • Core Function: These committees met throughout the year to exchange field data, identify gaps in standards, and recommend new areas for research and training.
  • Standards Advocacy: The CTC’s working groups contributed technical feedback to external bodies like ASTM and ICC. This coordinated approach reinforces AWCI’s respected position in national standards development, ensuring industry requirements are practical and enforceable for contractors and manufacturers.

American Society for Testing and Materials

AWCI continued to actively participate in ASTM committees (A05, C11, E06) in 2025, ensuring national standards reflect the wall and ceiling industry’s perspective.

Key initiatives tracked and influenced included updates to standards covering stucco drainage mats, firestop inspections, cold-formed steel, and gypsum products. Highlighting this commitment, AWCI’s Don Pilz was appointed co-chair of ASTM C1861 (Lathing and Furring Accessories), strengthening industry collaboration on design and application best practices.

International Code Council

AWCI continues to represent the wall and ceiling industry in the International Code Council’s (ICC) code development process, with participation in the 2027 code cycle.

Key focus areas include revisions to IBC Sections 1404.4 and 2510.6, which address stucco water management and drainage, fire-resistance-rated joint systems and penetrations, and the recognition of new firestop and cladding technologies within Chapter 7 of the International Building Code.

AWCI’s engagement ensures that proposed changes reflect real-world constructability and align with current ASTM and UL standards. Technical input was also provided to code committees reviewing requirements for cold-formed steel framing, gypsum sheathing, and EIFS assemblies, reinforcing AWCI’s commitment to maintaining consistency between standards, codes, and field practice.

Rainscreen Association in
North America

In 2025, AWCI continued its partnership with the Rainscreen Association in North America (RaiNA) to advance best practices for drainage, ventilation, and water management in stucco and exterior cladding.

AWCI ensured the contractor’s perspective was represented, helping to clarify performance expectations for the “drainage plane” and aligning practices with code standards (like IBC and ASTM E2556). This collaboration directly informed AWCI’s Stucco, Doing It Right® training and technical publications.

International Firestop Council

In 2025, AWCI strengthened its partnership with the International Firestop Council (IFC) to improve education, inspection consistency and code compliance for fire-resistive systems.

Through participation in IFC technical groups, AWCI contributed to initiatives related to UL 2079 joint listings and IBC Section 1705.17 special inspection protocols. This collaboration promotes standardized terminology and documentation among contractors, inspectors and designers.

This work directly supports the future development of Technical Manual 12-C (Standard Practice for Firestop Inspections) and the Joint Firestop Design Manual.
