Steel - Doing It Right

Steel—Doing It Right® is a two-day seminar formulated by experts from the Steel Framing Alliance, an organization at the forefront of the latest technological advances for building with cold-formed steel, and AWCI and its member experts. The seminar is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the construction methods and contractors’ issues including structural, load-bearing wall assemblies; interior systems; roof and floor assemblies; estimating; quality control and much more.

Benefits

About The Course

The seminar is aimed at owners, project managers, estimators, superintendents and foremen as well as architects and code officials.

Cold-formed steel framing has often been used for nonstructural applications, such as interior partitions. But it can also be used as the main structural element—and that requires a whole new set of knowledge, which will be covered in this course. You’ll learn about best practices in the use of cold-formed steel in construction today, so that you can tap this growing market opportunity and increase your potential for business growth.

This is not a certification program; however, each seminar participant will receive a certificate of attendance and attending engineers are eligible for Professional Development hours, and LU hours are available for AIA credit via the “Self-Report” option. Eligible hours vary between the Online and In-Person courses.

Topics Covered

  • Module 1: Introduction to Cold-formed Steel Framing
  • Module 2: Steel Framing Materials
  • Module 3: Engineering Considerations
  • Module 4: Basic Construction and Special Considerations
  • Module 5: Fastening and Cutting Guidelines
  • Module 6: Floor Assemblies
  • Module 7: Load-Bearing Wall Assemblies
  • Module 8: Wind-Bearing and Curtain Wall Framing
  • Module 9: Interior Systems
  • Module 10: Roof Assemblies
  • Module 11: Panelization

This is not a certification program; however, each seminar participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Attending engineers are eligible for 9 Professional Development hours, and 9 LU hours are available for AIA credit via the “Self-Report” option.

Instructor-Led Seminar

The seminar is two days starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m.

The course instructors are industry experts with backgrounds in steel and engineering. They interact with attendees by using real-life scenarios, slides and graphic animation to portray the range of material.

This is not a certification program; however, each seminar participant will receive a certificate of attendance. Attending engineers are eligible for 12 Professional Development hours, and 12 LU hours are available for AIA credit via the “Self-Report” option.

Instructors

Both instructors are experts in the field of CFS design and construction and bring a wealth of experience and insight to the seminar.

Don Allen, P.E., LEED A.P.

Don Allen is an internationally known expert on cold-formed steel structural design, has given presentations on steel design on four continents in the last three years. As director of engineering for Super Stud Building Products, headquartered in Edison, N.J., Allen is involved with hundreds of CFS projects each year.

He was recently involved in the design and construction of two loadbearing CFS structures in Nigeria. With a special interest in the structural role of materials in sustainable construction, Allen is a LEED® Accredited Professional, a member of American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute Committee on Sustainability, the ASCE SEI Committee on Cold-Formed Steel, and is chairman of the General Provisions Subcommittee of the American Iron and Steel Institute Committee on Framing Standards.

Allen won the 2013 recipient of the Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute Distinguished Service award, and he was instrumental in the development of the SSMA Code Compliance Certification program, and development of AISI’s North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing – Nonstructural Members (AISI S220).
