Immigration in Construction Is the Topic of the Next White Paper
The hot topic of immigration as it affects the wall and ceiling industry is the subject of the next white paper in the Research Series of the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry. The publication, Immigration and Construction, will be mailed to all AWCI members this month and marks the start of the Foundation’s annual fund-raising drive.
The white paper notes that immigrants are a vital part of the construction work force, making up about 20 percent overall but much more in the wall and ceiling industry. It starts with the history of immigration in the United States and ends with a discussion of current immigration legislation. In between are looks at the “big picture,” the impact of immigration on the construction industry and what other contractors are doing to assimilate their immigrant workers.
Immigration and Construction is the seventh publication in the Foundation Research Series. Publications such as this are made possible because of the monetary support from members.
Those who donate for the first time and give $250 will become a member of the Foundation Leadership Council. Those who contributed last year need only to increase their donation to the next level to be on the Leadership Council. Those on the Leadership Council are recognized on the Foundation’s letterhead as well as in various promotional materials, convention signage and other publications.

San Diego, Here We Come!
The city of San Diego will host AWCI members when they convene Sept. 18–22 for AWCI’s Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Week.
We will tell you more about the education sessions—The Work Force of 2010 (presented by Bob Losyk, a professional with more than 17 years of speaking experience, and more than 20 years of service, sales and top level management expertise) and Succession Planning (presented by James L. Krug, Ph.D., a senior consultant in the Engineering & Architectural Services Group at FMI)—next month. Until then, here is some information about the hotel and surrounding area.
The headquarters hotel, the Hilton San Diego Resort, is located in Mission Bay. This Four Diamond resort is across the bay from SeaWorld and closely located to other area attractions like the San Diego Zoo and Old Town Historic Park. If you prefer the indoors, California’s second largest city offers specialty shopping venues and several specialty museums such as the Firehouse Museum, the Maritime Museum, the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, the Children’s Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
But there is no need to leave the resort property because in addition to fine dining, the resort offers beach volleyball, five night-lighted tennis courts, a fitness center, putting greens, rentals of sports equipment like sailboats, paddleboats and bicycles, in addition to an outdoor heated pool, whirlpool spa and sun deck.
Those who attend the meeting will have unmatched networking and educational activities in which to participate, but AWCI staff members are also working on organizing new and fun activities for attendees.
