Looking to 2024

As we close out 2023, we look forward to a brand new year with our annual economic forecast (page 24). Well, maybe we shouldn’t look forward to 2024 from a business standpoint, but that may depend on your fields of experience. In general, we don’t see talk of a recession ending, but obviously no one knows exactly what is going to happen. Economists also discuss other issues and predictions for inflation, the labor market and the all-important consumer sentiment.

Interest rates will remain high, but those rates are expected to drop as the presidential election draws near. Until then, it might be a good time for your company leaders to think more about delving into the housing market, which is expected to do quite well in 2024. Economist Anirban Basu, chairman and CEO of Sage Policy Group, offers advice on indicators to watch to help plot your course, so make sure you read this article, then hang on for a bumpy year ahead.

Something that may help comes in the form of digitally assisted project planning. The article that begins on page 34 provides details on the subject that can help you bring those intricate, detailed designs to life in record time. Digital technology will take a look at those complex plans and start with the take-off. It can also evaluate the scope while considering the installation process, and help identify clashes and material needs. In the end, contractors can save time and money—and gain a competitive advantage.

Our last feature article, which is on page 42, takes a look at jobsite theft. Whether it’s a small tool or a full trailer, AWCI member contractors tell us what they do to keep their tools and equipment safe and secure from thieves, whether they be workers on the site, petty thieves in the neighborhood or members of an organized crime unit. Our members also tell us which sites are most at risk, and how your own employees can play a big role in discouraging crime.

I also want to draw your attention to Don Allen’s “Safety & Health” column on page 20. Don has written several educational articles related to safety this year, all of which bring you some amazing and useful tips for keeping your employees safe and healthy. His column this month is no different. Here he provides a synopsis of a safety roundtable discussion on mental health and well-being that was conducted at AWCI’s fall conference in October. Read it—and share it with others.

I close by offering you my most sincere best wishes for a wonderful holiday season, and I am excited to begin a new year with you. We have big plans for 2024, and I know it will be a good one—no matter what the economists say.
