Winner: CU Athletics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado
In early 2014, the University of Colorado announced the historic expansion of its Folsom Field and the creation of a state-of-the-art athletics complex. Despite the complexity of working with myriad specialty products, the construction schedule was aggressive. This included the installation of an overwhelming number of acoustic materials.
That’s why Heartland Acoustics & Interiors won the job. When the job closed in September 2015, Heartland had around $850,000 of the total contract. Almost 90 percent of the total work was to be completed between June and August, with 40 percent of the total work occurring just in July.
Specialty products included multi-tiered and flat linear metal ceilings, wood grille ceilings and a floating serpentine ceiling in addition to 117,000 square feet of various acoustical suspended ceilings. One of the most difficult challenges was having to plan, design and troubleshoot the linear metal ceilings to integrate smoothly and aesthetically with all of the various fixtures and devices that penetrated the ceilings. Heartland Acoustics & Interiors had several meetings with MEP and low-voltage contractors, and several phone calls to the ceiling manufacturer’s technical service department to come up with the best way to install the ceiling.
Just planning the production and installation of these custom graphic wall panels took several weeks. The final product was 60 feet long and 8.5 feet high. As the dominant design element in the high-profile football team meeting room, the finished product had to be an uncontested winner. Talk about pressure while the clock is running: Heartland Acoustics & Interiors could afford to print and install the wide-format stretch fabric only once. Thanks to careful planning and lots of energy, the work on this high-profile room was finished accurately the first time.
