The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system is being updated to simplify and improve the process of classifying less-than truckload (LTL) freight. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is leading this effort to modernize the system, making it easier for users and more efficient in classification.
Key updates include:
- Simplified NMFC: The new system will use standardized criteria based on density, handling, stowability, and liability.
- Enhanced User Experience: The classification process will be easier to understand.
- Increased Efficiency: Freight classification will be more accurate from the start.
What’s Changing
- A standardized density scale for LTL freight, with no handling, stowability or liability issues.
- Unique identifiers for freight requiring special handling or other considerations.
- Updated and streamlined commodity listings.
- Improved usability of the ClassIT classification tool.
Implementation Timeline: The first set of changes will be introduced in Docket 2025-1, which will go live on July 19, 2025. It’s essential to review the docket now to avoid potential costs from incorrect classifications.
Feedback: Industry professionals are encouraged to provide feedback on transportation characteristics like density, handling, stowability and liability, particularly for packaging amendments.
Public Meeting: Attend the FCDC meeting on March 3, 2025, in Clearwater Beach, Florida, to discuss these changes.
