AWCI on the Job

Stucco—Doing It Right Will Debut in Minneapolis

Stucco—Doing It Right, AWCI’s newest addition to the Doing It Right series of educational programs, will debut in Minneapolis on Sept. 25, 2008.

Developed under the guidance of an expert oversight group made up of contractors and manufacturers, some of the topics covered include codes and standards, substrates, design considerations, materials, weather concerns, and limitations of materials/stress control/cracking.

This one-day Stucco—Doing It Right seminar is based on ASTM C926 and C1063 and covers the basics of the application of portland cement–based plaster applied to metal and solid bases.

The seminar is aimed at project managers, superintendents and foreman as well as architects and code officials.

Go to www.awci.org/stucco.shtml for more information or to register.

AWCI’s Fall Conference: Meet Us in Honolulu

Looking for something to do this October?

Then meet us—your AWCI staff and your industry colleagues—in Honolulu for AWCI’s Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Week, Oct. 14–18, 2008.

The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, which boasts a 24-hour fitness center, shopping and many restaurants, is the headquarters hotel for AWCI’s fall conference. Located just 10 minutes from Honolulu International Airport, the resort is also only 1.5 blocks away from the Honolulu Zoo and 14 miles from Pearl Harbor.

But you don’t go to a resort in Honolulu and plan to spend all your time at the resort—you’ve got to get out and explore! AWCI offers a tour of the famous North Shore of Oahu, where you enjoy the breathtaking scenery and native wildlife, and see everything from the picturesque Byodo Temple to the Dole Pineapple Plantation. This tour takes place Oct. 16.

And what’s a visit to Hawaii without an old-fashioned luau? Let AWCI take you to Paradise Cove for the “real deal.” Keep Oct. 17 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. open so that you can take part in the great food, listen to Hawaiian stories and watch the hula show.

The luau is included in your full registration fee, but the North Shore tour is $79 per person and requires advance sign-up.

To learn more and to register, visit www.awci.org and click on the “Industry Executives’ Conference” tab.

Have You Been on the Air?

You never know when an AWCI member is going to be on television.

If you watched the NBC Nightly News on May 18, you saw an interview with AWCI’s Lee Zaretzky, president of Ronsco, Inc. in New York, talking about his company’s involvement with Non-Traditional Employment for Women, a New York–based nonprofit organization that trains women for skilled jobs in construction and other blue-collar industries.

And if your cable or satellite provider now airs the new Discovery network, Planet Green, you have the opportunity to watch the show, “Greensburg.” Greensburg is a program that puts the focus on the people of Greensburg, Kan., whose town was completely devastated by a tornado last year. With a clean slate to start the town over again, Greensburg city leaders have decided to set the example for the rest of the nation by rebuilding a green city.

How is AWCI involved in this project? AWCI member Howard Bernstein, president of Penn Installations, Inc. in Summerhill, Pa., spent his Spring Break helping Greensburg rebuild. Keep watching the program; you never know when you may see Howard or someone else you know! (Go to http://planetgreen.discovery.com/tv/ to find out if the channel is available in your area.)

With all the “extreme building” going on on television, it is not surprising that you may watch one of these shows and spy someone you know.

Are you are a contractor who wants to extend his/her 15 minutes of fame, let us know about it so that we can tell others to watch … or tell us about it after the fact so we can brag about it!

Send your “I’m a Star” news to porinchak@awci.org for consideration in an AWCI publication.
