AWCI’s Convention Education Sessions Are Set

AWCI’s Convention & INTEX Expo is March 30– April 3, 2014, at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and the education sessions are sure to help our members run a more successful business. “Spin for Success” is the convention’s theme, and you’ll have lots of chances to enrich your education by attending any one of these offerings:

• How to Avoid Confrontation with Change Orders and Scope Creep. Master the art of dealing with delays, accelerations, addition, deletions and other changes.

• Cloud, Mobile, Social and Other Innovative Ways Smart Wall and Ceiling Contractors Will Grow in a Slow Economy. What technology trends will impact your business in 2014?

• Attracting Young People into Construction Field Positions. As millennials enter the workforce, will they consider work in construction field positions?

• Clean Construction: Infection Control Risk Assessment. The importance of infection control before, during and after construction cannot be underestimated.

• Occupational Safety and Health Trends. This session will review hot button safety topics and the available safety resources for AWCI members.

• Construction Projects Are Heating Up around Continuous Insulation. What materials and installation procedures do you need to follow to keep up with the new codes?

• EQ Stud Assemblies. What’s the EQ of your studs?

April 3 is offered as an optional day of education for those who want to attend one of AWCI’s Doing It Right seminars. All-day instruction will be given on AWCI’s seminars on the exterior envelope, ceilings, gypsum and stucco.

In Memoriam: Harold “Renny” Huntley

AWCI lost a longtime committee member and former director Oct. 22 when Harold “Renny” Huntley died of complications from pneumonia. He was 64.

Huntley was a third generation plasterer. He earned his degree from Texas Lutheran College, joined his father in the family plastering business and then started his own company in San Juan during the mid-1970s. JDH, Inc., as the company was known, expanded from the original lath and plaster business to include acoustical ceilings, fireproofing, drywall, insulation, interior and exterior stucco, and some specialty categories. Huntley also introduced exterior insulation and finish systems to the commonwealth.

During that same time, JDH and Huntley joined AWCI. Huntley was active on the technical committees (EIFS, portland cement plaster, steel framing, gypsum board, industry tolerances) and spent several years volunteering his time as chairman of what was then known as the Steel Framing Committee. He also was a member of the Regional Vice President’s Council and various other committees, and he represented the Southeast conference on the AWCI board of directors in the mid-1990s. (Huntley’s son, Richard, is a current member of the AWCI board of directors.)
