Fall Conference Is in San Francisco

Join your AWCI friends and colleagues Sept. 27–Oct. 1 for this year’s AWCI Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Week in San Francisco. Hotel Nikko, the conference’s headquarters hotel, is a beautiful Union Square hotel in very close proximity to many of San Francisco’s great restaurants.

Along with the terrific location, attendees will want to learn from the education offerings, participate in committee meetings, and take in the local sights, sounds and smells of San Francisco.

The education sessions, which are offered Thursday and Friday mornings, are The 2020 Leader and Financial Trends in the Construction Industry. Also, AWCI’s committees will host various discussions, from technical and union issues to future conventions and future leaders.

And when the work is done, it’s time to have some fun! A tour of Alcatraz Island will take you to the infamous former federal prison. The island also features some of the most spectacular views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Other fun opportunities include various receptions, the Ladies’ Luncheon, the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry’s Golf Tournament and the last night’s AWCI Reception and Golf Awards.

The early bird registration deadline and cut-off date for hotel reservations is Aug. 26, 2005. Hotel rates start at $179 per night. Call the Hotel Nikko’s reservations department at 415.394.1111.

Full conference registration is only $400 for you and your spouse or guest, if you register prior to Aug. 26. After Aug. 26, a full registration is $450.

Fore! Next Golf Tournament Is at The Presidio

San Francisco’s Presidio Golf Course offers a venue like no other to those who participate in the Foundation of the Wall and Ceiling Industry’s Golf Tournament on Sept. 29, during the AWCI Industry Executives’ Conference & Committee Week.

The course’s brochure notes that 100 years ago, the landmark course was open for use only by military personnel and as a small private club. It eventually was transferred to the National Park Service, and over the years, many notable names in history have played there, including Dwight Eisenhower, Bing Crosby, Babe Ruth and Arnold Palmer.

According to an article by Matt Foley in the Feb. 27, 2005, issue of Hastings Independent News Magazine, “Length is not your main enemy at the Presidio like it can be elsewhere in SF. The course plays to only 6,500 yards from the tips. Here, though, trees and elevation are what you need to watch out for. … The layout here is up and down, over and over again, which can make this a roller coaster mental ride.”

And GoldCalifornia.com says, “The Presidio opened for play to the public in 1997 after a three year, $5 million renovation project. … Swirling winds and lots of undulation are the trademark here. You quickly see why the military’s top brass would always put the Presidio at the top of their West Coast Inspection itinerary.”

Are you ready to take on the Presidio? If you think you are, contact AWCI’s Jane Northern today at 703.538.1615 or northern@awci.org to reserve your tee time.

The cost is $225 per player.

The tournament is sponsored by National Gypsum Company.
